地址: 建筑面积: 204 sq. meters 竣工日期: July 2001 能源利用: Natural ventilation, passive solar heating and cooling, photovoltaic power, energy-efficient lighting, daylighting, motion detectors, programmable thermostats, and a tight building envelope are among the many energy-saving design techniques incorporated into this building. Daylighting is provided through south-facing windows and skylights, minimizing the need for electric lighting. Awnings, shades, a living-canopy trellis, and motorized shades help to keep the building cool during the summer. A clerestory window vents hot air to the north openings while providing enough circulation to cool the building passively. Concrete masonry units and rammed-earth walls provide thermal mass. Cool night air is stored in the building's floor and walls, heating up only slowly during the daytime. As a result, the building's interior remains at a relatively constant temperature even as the outside temperature changes. Insulated structural wall panels help insulate the building. Hydronic radiant heat provides back-up heating for the coldest winter mornings. A 3-kW roof-integrated photovoltaic system provides electricity to the building and also to the electrical grid. The building has been a net energy exporter, producing more electricity than it uses. The thin-film amorphous silica PV array was installed as a peel-and-stick laminate. Modeling indicated that the building would consume 80% less energy than would a building built in minimal compliance with 节水方案: Underground piping was installed to accommodate the future harvesting of roof rainwater, efficient plumbing fixtures, and waterless urinals. The landscaping of Earth Lab is watered via a drip irrigation system. 材料选择: The material selection policy used for the Material selection shall be based on the following considerations: Avoid loss of biodiversity, habitat alteration, stratospheric ozone depletion, and global climate change. Use products made from, and packaged with, renewable resources obtained in a sustainable manor. Use products that conserve resources: that is reused, recycled, uses by-products, uses faster-growing species of wood, from sustainable forests, from sustainable agricultural practices, etc. Is the product less toxic in mining, manufacturing, installation, use, and maintenance? Is the product durable, low maintenance, and not needing painting or coatings? Consider life cycle cost and longevity. Consider weather , fire, vermin, seismic, and wind resistance. Use products that are very efficient in use of electricity, petroleum, water, etc., and that have low embodied energy overall; consider transportation. Are components reusable, recyclable, or at least biodegradable? Consider deconstruction issues. Use socially responsible criteria in selection of designers, suppliers, and contractors. 室内环境品质: Indoor environmental quality was considered when specifying carpet, paint, adhesives, and pest control strategies for the Natural ventilation and ample daylighting make for a comfortable interior and a connection between the building's occupants and the surrounding environment. Thermal mass in the floor and walls ensures a relatively constant indoor temperature, despite temperature swings outside.
